What is a Doula?

A doula, a Greek word meaning "woman servant," is today used to describe a woman who helps another woman through labor and birth. A doula provides continuous support throughout the labor, birth, and during post-partum care. Special one-on-one care is provided, which many women need but do not receive. A doula works with you exclusively to ensure that you get the kind of care that you desire.   For more information on what a doula does, check out the articles posted on the "Reading List and Related Links" page.

Why Should I Choose a Doula?

Doulas provide insight during labor and childbirth. A doula draws on her knowledge and experience to best help the mother achieve her desires.
A doula never leaves the woman unattended and provides additional support for the mother's husband or birth partner.

A doula never imparts her feelings on the choices of the mother. She is simply there to support the mother in any and all decisions.
The doula is there to provide comfort, experience, care, and a loving heart.

What Questions Should I Ask a Prospective Doula?

¨       What do you like best about your job?

¨       What inspired you to become a doula?

¨       What kind of training have you received?

¨       What can you provide that is different than my partner?

¨       What is your educational background?

¨       Who is your back-up? When might she care for me?

¨       Are there any restrictions placed on you by the hospital/birth center?
